How to Write a Scientific Paper?

(Tips by Prof. Sophien Kamoun for clearer, more compelling, and effective scientific writing)

Writing a scientific paper requires a clear narrative, careful planning, and a structured approach. In the video lecture “Don’t Perish”, Prof. Sophien Kamoun (GetGenome, The Sainsbury Laboratory) emphasizes that, beyond technical accuracy, a paper must present a compelling scientific story.

Early planning of publication, developing a central storyline, and clearly defining key findings are essential. Kamoun advises drafting the results first and tailoring the introduction accordingly, while the discussion should place findings in a broader context. The abstract and title should be written last.

Kamoun also highlights the importance of open science (preprints, data sharing) and clear, concise writing. Researchers are encouraged to use AI as a learning aid rather than a substitute for independent thinking. Successful publishing remains key to knowledge dissemination and academic career development.
