Biosciences

interdisciplinary doctoral study program

The scientific field of agronomy introduces postgraduate students to research into the interactions of agricultural productiom and other, environmentally associated human activities, with environmental factors, global environmental changes and changes in soil use.

The focus will be on studying the laws of construction and functioning of agro- and other ecosystems, mastering methods of studying soil, atmostphere, plants and their interaction with other organisms, on analysis of the effects of environmental pollution on plants, soil and the climate, and on seeking new technologies that will enable sustainable development in the field of agriculture and related activities, and preservation of biodiversity and the environment. A student learns to use methods of chemical and biological monitoring of the state of the environment, is familiarised with methods of sampling, chemical and biological analysis and evaluating the results. S/he is acquainted with possibilities of remediation of polluted soils and sanation of agroecosystems; s/he is familiarised with methods of numerical simulation dynamic modelling, with the interactions between genetic and ecological factors in forming phenotypes. An additional educational aim is deepening knowledge in the field of dangerous substances in soils and plants and their transmission to the human organism. A student builds on knowledge of basic statistics with knowledge of the most demanding statistical methods and approaches that are used in the biosciences, and is familiarised with models for risk assessment because of living in a polluted region and eating food produced there.
